Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight Review: A Smart Safety Upgrade for Existing Smoke Alarms
Disclosure: The folks at Leeo kindly provided a Smart Alert Nightlight for this review. As always, all opinions and experiences shared here are my own.
Everyone wants to keep their family safe. From smart security cameras and connected door locks to intelligent alarms and monitoring devices, home safety has become one of the fastest-growing categories in the smart home industry.
When it comes to protecting your home, smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are some of the most important devices you can own. However, traditional alarms have one major limitation: they can alert people inside the home, but they cannot tell you what is happening when you are away.
That is where smart safety devices come in.
While researching options for upgrading my own smoke and CO alarm setup, I initially considered the Nest Protect. Since I already enjoyed using my Nest Thermostat, a connected smoke alarm from the same ecosystem seemed like an obvious choice.
However, after looking more closely at the cost and considering that my new home would require multiple smoke alarms, replacing every unit with premium smart alarms became a much bigger investment than expected.
That is when I discovered the Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight.
Instead of replacing every smoke detector in your home, Leeo takes a different approach: it adds smart monitoring capabilities to your existing alarms.
After testing the device, I found it to be a surprisingly effective and affordable smart home safety upgrade.
What Does the Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight Do?
The Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight is a Wi-Fi-connected smart device designed to listen for the specific sound patterns produced by smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Rather than replacing your existing alarm system, Leeo works alongside it.
When your alarm sounds while you are away, Leeo can send notifications directly to your smartphone, helping you stay informed even when you are not home.
In addition to alarm monitoring, Leeo also includes:
- Temperature monitoring
- Humidity sensing
- A high-quality LED nightlight
- Millions of customizable color options
Requirements
To use the Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight, you need:
- A standard electrical outlet
- Wi-Fi connection
- Compatible smartphone with the Leeo app
So, does Leeo actually deliver on its promises? Let’s take a closer look.
Design and Appearance
I did not expect to be as impressed with the design of the Leeo as I was.
At first glance, it looks like a simple smart sensor. During the day, it blends quietly into your home without drawing attention. At night, however, it transforms into an attractive ambient lighting device.
The built-in nightlight is much better than expected.
Rather than being an afterthought, the LED lighting creates a beautiful soft glow on the wall, producing an effect similar to a small solar eclipse. It can reproduce a wide range of colors with adjustable brightness levels.
The lighting feature works especially well in:
- Bedrooms
- Hallways
- Children’s rooms
- Bathrooms
One warning: if you have children, be careful about showing them all the available colors. The Leeo may quickly become their favorite nightlight.
The companion app follows the same philosophy. It is simple, clean, and focused on the features most users actually need. During testing, the app remained stable and reliable.
Setup and User Experience
Setting up the Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight is extremely easy.
The entire process takes only a few minutes:
- Plug the Leeo into an outlet
- Pair it with the mobile app
- Connect it to your Wi-Fi network
- Allow it to listen to your existing smoke or CO alarm
The final step involves testing your alarm so Leeo can recognize its sound pattern.
After activating my smoke alarm for several seconds, the Leeo analyzed the sound and confirmed that it was ready to monitor future alerts.
Once installed, Leeo becomes a true “set it and forget it” smart home device.
It quietly sits in your home, listening for alarms, monitoring environmental conditions, and providing ambient lighting when needed.
Real-World Alarm Testing
To test Leeo’s most important feature, I intentionally activated my smoke alarm and waited to see how quickly the device would respond.
After several seconds of alarm sound, Leeo successfully detected the alert and sent a notification to my smartphone.
The notification included:
- An alarm warning
- A short audio recording of the detected sound
- Quick access to emergency calling options
The audio recording was one of the most useful features because it allowed me to confirm that Leeo was detecting a real alarm rather than another similar sound, such as a television clip or toy.
I tested the system multiple times, and it consistently worked as expected.
For homeowners who want additional protection while away from home, this remote notification feature provides valuable peace of mind.
Smart Home Integration
One area where Leeo feels limited is smart home ecosystem support.
At the time of testing, integration options were still fairly limited. The device did not support platforms such as Wink, Nest, or IFTTT.
For users who already have a larger smart home setup, deeper integration would be useful. For example, connecting Leeo with other smart devices could potentially trigger additional actions during an emergency.
The temperature and humidity data would also be more useful if it could connect with other home automation platforms.
Leeo was still an evolving product at the time, so expanded compatibility could improve with future updates.
Another limitation is smartphone compatibility. At the time of review, Leeo primarily supported iOS devices, with Android support still developing.

Build Quality and Reliability
The Leeo is a well-designed product that feels carefully engineered.
The rotating mechanism used to adjust the nightlight brightness operates smoothly, and the LED lighting quality is excellent.
The alarm detection microphone is the strongest part of the device. During testing, it performed accurately and consistently.
The additional environmental sensors were less impressive.
The humidity sensor provided reasonably accurate readings after adjusting over time. However, the temperature sensor showed noticeable inconsistencies and reported temperatures lower than the actual room temperature.
Since temperature monitoring is more of an extra feature rather than the main purpose of the product, this issue does not significantly affect the device’s primary safety function.
Price and Value
The Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight was priced around $99.
At first glance, that may seem expensive for a nightlight. However, the real value of Leeo is not the lighting feature — it is the ability to receive immediate alerts when something goes wrong at home while you are away.
For homeowners with interconnected smoke alarms throughout the house, one Leeo device may provide coverage without requiring expensive replacement of every alarm.
Compared with installing multiple smart smoke detectors, Leeo offers a much more affordable path toward adding smart safety monitoring.
Final Thoughts
The Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight is a unique smart home safety device that solves a real problem.
Instead of forcing homeowners to replace their entire smoke alarm system, it adds intelligence to the equipment they already have.
Its biggest strengths include:
- Easy installation
- Reliable alarm detection
- Remote smartphone notifications
- Attractive ambient lighting
- Affordable smart safety upgrade
While improved smart home integration and better environmental sensors would make the product even stronger, Leeo remains a clever and practical solution for homeowners who want more awareness and protection.
A smarter home does not always require replacing everything. Sometimes the best upgrade is simply adding intelligence to the devices you already trust.
